It is amazing just how many people we meet in life. Some are close to us and play an important role, some are marginal and others no more than fleeting acquaintances. All of them have a story to tell and if you keep an open mind and are prepared to listen, every exchange is an enriching experience. In this respect, I consider myself more fortunate than many.
Straight after my A-levels and eager to see something of the world, considering myself “grown-up”, I embarked on what was only supposed to be a trip and took the ferry from Harwich to Hamburg. Then all my plans went haywire and life took over. I found a job and was accepted at Hamburg University. What a stimulating experience that was in the 1970s! To cut a long story short, I never returned to live in the UK and here I am more than fifty years later, living in Sardinia having written a book!
Why am I telling you all this? Well, people are fascinating creatures and I have met so many from different countries, cultures and walks of life. Sometimes, no words were exchanged and imagination took over. Sitting in a busy airport watching strangers hurry past towards unknown destinations, I would pass the time by creating a story around them. All this stood me in good stead when I was trying my hand at writing. As a first-time author, attempting to create true to life characters was very challenging. I feel I can honestly say that in “A Tarnished Life” there is a little something of everybody I have had the good fortune to meet and I am grateful to them for that.
