Most people associate Sardinia with miles of golden sand and crystal
clear water. A holiday paradise in the middle of Europe. Of course,
Sardinia is this and much more.
For anyone looking for something
different, Sardinia has many places of historical interest well worth a
visit. The nuraghe are one of the most amazing and outstanding features
of Sardinia. They date back to between 1800 and 1200 BC and still rise
in their thousands all over the island. It is thought that they formed
defensive strongholds and dwelling places for the early Sardinians, who
lived in organized communities under a tribal chieftain and worked the
land. Probably the most iconic is the Nuragic complex of Barumini in the
heart of Sardinia, which is now a UNESCO site. Other fascinating
remains from the same period include giants’ tombs and sacred wells,
dolmens, menhirs and ‘fairy houses’. The Phoenicians and Romans also
left amphitheatres and temples for us to admire, not to mention the
industrial heritage sites which bear witness to Sardinia’s glorious
