BE REALISTIC

One of the biggest challenges I faced when writing “A Tarnished Life” was to create true-to-life characters and realistic scenes: people and places the reader could relate to. Have a look at the picture below showing villagers in their traditional costumes. At a glance you may think you are looking at a photograph. But no, it is a mural, a form of art which can be seen all over Sardinia. The town of Orgosolo is renowned for the number and variety of these paintings which adorn the streets. Many depict scenes from everyday life in Sardinia’s rural past and are so realistic that for a moment you feel almost compelled to stop and say, ‘Hello’. It is exactly this type of realism I strived to create in words. Successfully or unsuccessfully, I’ll leave that for you to decide.
